ALUMINIUM CARPORT FAQs
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ALUMINIUM CARPORT AND A SHADE NET CARPORT?
WILL AN ALUMINIUM CARPORT RUST NEAR THE COAST?
No. Aluminium does not rust — it forms a passive oxide layer that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. Powder-coated aluminium maintains its appearance and structural integrity in Cape Town’s salt air environment without any special maintenance or periodic painting. This is the primary reason we recommend aluminium over painted steel for all coastal carport applications.
DOES A CARPORT REQUIRE COUNCIL APPROVAL IN CAPE TOWN?
In most cases yes — fixed carport structures require building plan approval from the City of Cape Town. Requirements vary by zoning and size. Our team can advise on the approval process. Some properties in estates may have additional HOA requirements which we can also assist with.
FOLD ARM FAQs
What is the difference between a cassette and standard fold arm awning?
A standard awning leaves the roller mechanism exposed when retracted. A cassette awning encloses the roller (and, in the case of a full cassette, the folded arms) in a protective housing. Cassette systems protect the fabric and mechanism from weather, UV and bird droppings, extending service life significantly. We recommend cassette systems for exposed positions and for motorised installations.
Can fold arm awnings withstand Cape Town wind?
Fold arm awnings should always be retracted in strong winds. All systems include a wind recommendation, and motorised systems can be fitted with automatic wind sensor retraction. During typical Cape Town summer afternoons we recommend monitoring wind conditions and retracting the awning when the south-easter strengthens. Our team will advise on wind ratings during the consultation.
